How to Create a Quiz Lead Magnet

Small business owner, are you ready to gain valuable insights about your audience, grow your email list, and sell more intentionally? A quiz lead magnet is for you!

Whether you're brand new to email marketing or you've been stuck in growing your email list, this post on how to create a quiz lead magnet will serve you and help you hit your business goals.

What is a lead magnet?

A lead magnet, or freebie, is something you receive in exchange for your name and email address. It's the not-so-secret weapon to growing an email list. Email marketing is a powerful tool for growing and building community and boosting sales, and your lead magnet is the ticket. For more inspiration on lead magnet ideas, read this blog post.

What You Need to Create a Quiz Lead Magnet

Here are some things you need to create a quiz lead magnet. Please note that these items are for an online, automated quiz, but if you really wanted to bootstrap this, you could pull inspiration from these concepts.

Online Quiz Platform

First, you need an online quiz builder platform. Interact is the platform I highly recommend using, as it's extremely user-friendly with incredible customer support, and it integrates with many email marketing platforms. Click here to create an Interact account and try it out for free.

Email marketing provider

Next, you need an email marketing provider. Flodesk is the top email marketing service I recommend for its usability, cost, and stunning design. Click here to sign up for a free trial of Flodesk and get 50% off your first year.

The reason why I recommend Flodesk and Interact together is that there is a direct integration built into Flodesk. This means that the two platforms can talk to each other without needing a third-party automation software like Zapier. You'll see why this is important below, but I love the simplicity of using these two programs.

Quiz Lead Magnet Example

To make sure we're on the same page, I want to share a quiz lead magnet example. Click here to take my free Marketing Destination Quiz, which will tell you exactly which area of your marketing to focus on for maximum impact in this season.

As you go through the quiz, notice the questions, design, and delivery of your results. These are all things we'll cover for you in the steps below!

Steps to Create a Quiz Lead Magnet

Feeling inspired and ready to create your own quiz lead magnet? Let's walk through step-by-step how to bring your very own quiz to life.

Come up with a quiz topic that appeals to your ideal client.

Your quiz topic will make or break whether or not people will want to take your quiz. So, conduct market research and brainstorm a quiz topic that will appeal to your ideal client. What would they like to learn about you, your products or service, or even themselves?

In my Marketing Destination Quiz example, the topic came up because people often asked me what to focus on in their marketing. My ideal client feels overwhelmed by all the platforms and strategies, so it gives them one thing to prioritize.

List 4-5 possible outcomes.

Once you have your quiz topic, come up with possible answers or outcomes. I recommend having 4-5 outcomes to provide some variety for your ideal clients and to make sure the results are truly tailored to them.

Write 2-3 questions per outcome.

Now that you have your possible answers, it's time to write your questions. To make things easier for you, work backwards. Take one outcome possibility, and write 2-3 questions for it. These can be yes/no questions, or they can be more in-depth. You can always play with the wording later on.

Input the questions into your online quiz platform.

Now it's time to add your questions and answer choices to your online quiz platform! Login to Interact, and create a new quiz. Add each question and answer, and map every possible answer to a quiz outcome. The platform walks you through how to do this. Be sure to move around and shuffle your questions! You can also update your own colors, branding, and images for your quiz.

Create a public URL landing page for people to take your quiz.

In order for people to take your quiz, you must create a public URL landing page. Interact has a live link URL for the quiz that you can use, or you can create your own URL and embed it into your website (that’s what I did here). I recommend the second option because you have more control over the look and design of your quiz, and it's better for search engine optimization.

Make sure people receive their results.

In Interact, turn lead generation on and make sure it's connected to your email marketing platform of choice to collect emails. You have the option to add a quiz result redirect link, or you can customize the result page within the platform itself.

For my Marketing Destination Quiz, I have it redirecting to a URL with a one-pager PDF document that has a ton of information on their result (example here). I love this option, because it's on-brand, and it's something quiz takers can download to reference later.

BONUS: Tailor an email sequence to each outcome possibility.

If you really want to make the most of your quiz lead magnet, I highly recommend tailoring a custom email sequence to each outcome possibility. You now know a bit more about your quiz taker, so use that knowledge to serve them better!

This is where Flodesk comes in. When you set up the direct Integration with Interact (in your Flodesk account settings), you can tailor each quiz outcome to a segment on your list. Then, you'll set up a workflow with emails that go out specific to the result someone received! This will build even more trust and has the potential to significantly drive revenue in your business.
